In Cruisin’ For A Bruce-in, we ride along with Florida Attorney Bruce Denson as he gives brief explanations on Florida Law and what to do in common legal situations.
Want to take some of the anxiety out of your first appearance in court. May be the first time you’ve been to court and you’re a little nervous so let me give you a few tips. And the first one is to be on time. And when I say be on time I mean be at the courthouse 30 maybe even 45 minutes before your court date. So, if you’re scheduled for 8:30, plan on being there at 8 o’clock. That’ll give you time to get parked and get through the metal detectors, find the courtroom without being rushed or hurried. And plan on traffic being bad. It’s usually during rush hour. It may be the worst traffic of the of the day. So, plenty of time for that. Get up early, take a hot shower, lots of soap, relax yourself a little bit, then get to the courtroom sit down pull your shoulders back, relax, listen. Start taking in what’s happening in the courtroom so that you can be ready when your case is called to come up to the podium and talk to the judge about your case.
I cannot stress enough how important it is to make a good first impression when showing up for court. A judge is person just like any one else and they will make snap decisions about you. Showing up late to court indicates to the judge that you don’t prioritize your case. Nothing makes you look worse to a judge than showing up in that courtroom after he has sat down at the bench. Likewise, showing up late makes it impossible for you to preview the cases before yours, which can give you information on how to deal with the judge. So, show up early and be prepared.
