Cruisin' For A Bruce-in: The Right to Peacefully Assemble

In Cruisin' For A Bruce-in, we ride along with Florida Attorney Bruce Denson as he gives brief explanations on Florida Law and what to do in common legal situations.

Transcript

Alright, let's talk about your First Amendment right to peacefully assemble. So, this is a little TikTok constitutional law seminar here.

You have the right to peacefully assemble. The founding fathers of our country thought that it was so important that it ought to be the First Amendment. They thought that the protection of freedom of speech required the explicit protection to freely assemble. They want us to be able to get together in places to discuss ideas to protest the government to talk about how we can become better in ourselves and in our nation. So, they enshrined the First Amendment to give us the right to peacefully assemble.

Now, we're not talking about looting; we're not talking about rioting; we're not talking about things that cause an imminent danger to other people or police officers. We're talking about getting together in public and some private spaces to peacefully assemble to discuss ideas.

Further Thoughts

The right to peacefully assemble allows us to meet together in public areas and to form associations without the government coming in and shutting us down. As long as the gathering is peaceful and is not cause an imminent risk to people or property, it is a legal assembly and the government is barred by the constitution from interfering. So, when we exercise these rights, it's important to remain peaceful, avoid conflict, and respect the people and property around us.
