Don't hire a lawyer that just tells you what you want to hear. You need to pick a lawyer that you can effectively communicate with, one that you can tell case to, and who can then tell you what may be a difficult conversation but don't be afraid to have that difficult conversation up front. It's better to do that upfront to have realistic expectations of how to resolve your case rather than to create a false expectation that will never be met.

Pick a lawyer that you're comfortable communicating with in-person, pick one that talks to you on the phone, pick one that is willing to text with you, email you, however you like to communicate. Pick a lawyer whose communication style fits the way that you like to talk, the way that you like to communicate, so that you get good information about your case throughout the process.

The level of communication you have with your lawyer can have dramatic effects on the outcome of your case. Not having good communication with your lawyer can lead to confusion, and stress - which is certainly something you don't need with a criminal case. However, effective communication can help a lawyer better understand your situation and help in getting the state to better understand your situation, and get you better results. So, always choose a lawyer who, first of all, tells you the truth, who's communication style fits with yours, who you're comfortable speaking with, and who you are able to develop a reliable dialogue with.
